I find it curious that soon after Jesus’ resurrection his followers became known as followers of the Way. This the description was used to describe those whom Paul was persecuting and rounding up in his zealous attempt to squash the movement. The Hebrew word for way or pathway is derek suggesting something more like the cow path cut into the pasture.
I wonder if when Jesus is saying “I am the way,” he means, Look at me. Follow me. Do what I do. Have dinner with the crooked tax man. Have compassion on the sex trade workers. Visit the sick and imprisoned. Enjoy a great party with the best of wines. Welcome strangers as family. Turn over some tables when necessary. Take time alone to pray and meditate. Walk places and notice the birds of the air and the flowers of the field. Cry with those who are sad. Heal the sick. Free the oppressed. Raise the dead. Wear a deep, well worn way into that kind of living.
