I saw a small notice with tear-away phone number and email address several weeks ago at the Coop and got in touch with Michael who is a student in Kwantlen Polytechnic’s Commercial Beekeeping Program. He got tired of his office job and wanted to explore something new. And what could be more important than beekeeping. Michael came out to have a look at our property as a site for wintering bees. He has been working for about a year with a beekeeper from Manitoba who moves these bees around Western Canada for pollination purposes and of course honey production. Were it not for bees we would not eat much of what we do today. They are critical to our food security and threatened in many ways. This was a small opportunity to do our part.
Within 30 minutes the operation is complete they are off. Before Michael leaves I give him a handful of juicy apples. Next year this same tree might benefit from this little effort to keep the bee populations of the world vibrant and healthy.
