Which then begs the question, “Are we engaged in the crucial struggle of our time?” There seem to be so many issues with which we could engage. So many injustices, so many challenges. Which do we choose and are we willing to die for that cause as companions of Jesus?
Ignacio Ellacuria was a Jesuit priest who was martyred in November 1989 along with five other priests, by the El Salvadoran military during that country’s struggle against a vicious and unjust regime, the residue from which many people in that country still struggle today. In the midst of that struggle Ellacuria asked the question,” What is it to be a companion of Jesus today? It is to engage, under the standard of the cross, in the crucial struggle of our time: the struggle for faith and that struggle for justice which it includes.”
