A number of years ago my daughter-in-law gave a presentation at Washington State University to a room full of Mathematicians. I hardly understood a word of what she was saying but she presented with imagination and excitement and the presentation was received in kind. It was followed by many responses and questions by people who were equally schooled in this world of numbers. But you could see it was as much creativity as it was logic and reason. It was quite wonderful to see. I confess that somewhere around the 10th grade I lost all confidence in being able to do much in this area of the created world.
The movie is more than a film for math nerds. It is an illustration of the complexity of our wonderful world and the gift we are given to pursue every corner of it. Whether Ramanujan ever said it or not, near the end of the movie his character says, “We do not create these mathematical formulas. They are there, waiting for us to discover them.” True for mathematics and so much more that that.
