So it was even more encouraging to see photos of this lovely bronze statue by artist Kristen Visbal placed on Wall Street yesterday by State Street Global Advisors, the world’s third largest asset manager, to start their campaign pressuring other companies to add more women to their boards. This tiny little girl is big.
Adichie again, “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are.”
Lots of work to be done here.
I will be taking a break from this blog for the next few weeks. Jenny and I are privileged to travel to Egypt to be with the Christian Reformed church’s mission team that works out of Cairo, to see some of the sights and be with the Christian community of people there.
