The experiences of the last three weeks varied from wonderful to challenging, to joyful and sad, with joy prevailing. But the gap between the world I live in and the world of most Sierra Leonians is enormous and the more often I go the fewer answers I have about what to do about the chasm. In the end I can only do what I can do and you what you are able to do to the best of our talents, resources and love. And the greatest of these is love.
I left Kabala, Sierra Leone this past Saturday morning at 6 am and arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday afternoon at 1 pm due to a cancelled flight in Montreal. I was scheduled to be home Monday evening. The delay made me realize once again how much I take for granted about how in my world, even when things don't work, they still work. After several hours of waiting because of an airplane mechanical issue the flight was cancelled and a new flight scheduled for Tuesday morning. We all got into a cue and waited to be given a hotel room, food vouchers, a wintery taxi ride to the hotel and a new seat on the early morning flight. Tuesday morning all 350 of us got back on the plane and we arrived at YVR just after noon.
