It is also amazing, at least in my mind, that I have complete confidence in the electoral process. I went to a very calm polling station in Fort Langley. I showed them my driver’s licence and my polling card. I signed a statement and received a ballot. I marked it, the tab was torn off and I deposited my ballot in the box. I didn’t for a moment feel like this same fair and calm situation wasn’t happening all over the province for thousands of voters. And waking up this morning, I have trust in the results. I would be shocked if I heard there was tampering with the process. That confidence is an enormous blessing that many in the world do not share. Like all good gifts, it needs to be nurtured and cared for or it too can be squandered.

We may all feel a certain growing anxiety in the world and possibly a shift away from liberal democracies but for British Colombians I believe yesterday’s very close provincial electoral race is very good news. When a governing party gets complacent and even arrogant, the ballot box and ordinary citizens are still able to make corrections. Votes are counted and they count.
