Our female barn owl laid her eggs every 2-3 days to get to six so we are trying to do the math to figure when the first will hatch. An average clutch is about 4-7 eggs. Unlike most birds, the barn owl begins the incubation process as soon as the first of the eggs is laid and at about 31-32 days of incubation the first of owlets will hatch and this will continue until all are hatched, two to three days apart. Could be Easter Sunday or even earlier. The advantage to this spread out hatching is to lower the demand on food which has to be provided by the male. There can be as much as three weeks difference in age between first and last hatched. Our female hardly leaves the nest while sitting on the eggs and she seems to be content with take-out food delivered by her mate. During this Covid time we all have had to get used to that phenomenon.
