Maybe the bigger problems in the world are my own. My own greed, my own thoughtlessness, my own self-centredness, my own affluence, my own lack of care for others. I wonder if each time we read about something out there we asked ourselves what had to change ‘in here’ to make the difference.
We like the problems in our world to be out there. The problem is ISIS and the global terrorist threat. The problem is burning of fossil fuels and global warming. The problem is a looming financial crisis. The problem is refugees swarming our borders. The problem is poverty and suicide in First Nations communities. The problems is creeping liberalism. The problem is the way that other people live. Why is the problem so seldom my own problem? Why is it so easy to read the news from a great distance and fail to ask myself how things might change if I did? How would the world be different if I were different?
Maybe the bigger problems in the world are my own. My own greed, my own thoughtlessness, my own self-centredness, my own affluence, my own lack of care for others. I wonder if each time we read about something out there we asked ourselves what had to change ‘in here’ to make the difference.
