I sometimes hear people who take extravagant holidays say things like, ‘I’ve worked so hard, we really deserve this.” How is it that we deserve it? Say that to the woman who cleans up your hotel room or the young man in white shirt and black slacks who cleans the pool of your all inclusive. I deserve this. Where did this sense of entitlement come from?
We don’t use the old word ‘stewardship’ much anymore, but the dictionary definition is really good: ‘The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care.” If our starting point was stewardship, that every dollar I earn is not mine to do with as I please but rather to please the one who gifted it to me, how might my spending and living change? Onyx status is nothing but the sad accumulation of points, and to what end?
