There have been church pastors and leaders who have called the Covid restrictions a strike at religious freedom, some going so far as to call it persecution. No, it is not!! Given what some people do suffer, to call these restrictions persecution is ridiculous. Those same leaders ought to feel chastised when the BC Provincial Health Officer is the one who speaks the gospel. "Faith is not a building," Henry said. "It's not about Sunday mornings, but it's about every day, and how we connect with each other and how we support each other. It's not about rights.”
I am grateful to the religious leaders who have met in dialogues with Henry and I have also been impressed with the many imaginative ways that churches have risen to the challenges of this time. But if a year in, you are still complaining about not being able to be in a building together for an hour on Sunday morning, then take a page out of Henry’s notebook: adapt. Many British Columbians owe their lives to this woman, who cares enough not to think about what some pastors are going to say about her. If we don’t know how to be the church on Monday to Saturday, we can’t call ourselves a church on Sunday.
I’m grateful to Dr. Bonnie Henry and for our package of seeds. I’m getting ready to start them in the greenhouse in a few weeks and I expect to enjoy them in our garden this summer, possibly with a crowd of folks, just being church together.
