I was thinking about my Mom on Mother’s Day and how difficult immigration was for her. To leave The Netherlands in the 50’s was to come to terms with the reality that she would not likely see her parents again. It was difficult enough to manage passage to Canada let alone imagine going back to visit. She was never one to complain so we never heard about it. I think she especially missed her father, my namesake, Pake Oense. He died before she could return. She could not even attend the funeral. My mom was a very happy person and could see the bright side of things though there must have been difficult and lonely times in those early years. She never knew her own mother who died a month after she was born because of complications from her own birth, but came to love her stepmother when my grandfather remarried. I am honoring my sweet mom today.
