“Why Moth? Moths are attracted to light because of something called transverse orientation, which means they use distant light sources like the moon as a reference point for their navigation. Around man-made lights like electric lanterns and streetlights, they become confused, and disorientated, and instead fly straight toward the light source... which ends up killing them.
I see this as a metaphor for myself and for most people I know. We are distracted by the artificial brightnesses of the world, of the urgencies in our lives, of heavy-handed religion, and we have a sense of disorientation regarding our identities, relationships, and spiritualties. It's hard to have a sense of where we are and where we should be going. It's hard to have a sense of who we are!”
We are so attracted and distracted by the big lights, the headlines, the glitz and glamour that we lose our way in the darkness, rather than be guided by lesser lights, more distant moons and stars.
