We often speak about how there just isn’t a good way to translate a word or a phrase from one language into another. I’ve written before about how the Dutch word gezellig cannot be translated well. The other day we read this Proverb and I had the same feeling, that somehow something had been lost. The NIV translates Proverbs 11:25 as “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” I can see why the translators didn’t go with the Hebrew but it has far more visual power: “The liberal soul shall be made fat and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” I guess it was a case of political correctness winning out over good translation. Refreshing is OK but getting watered is better.
