A number of months ago we had a hole dug to form and pour a foundation for our new barn. The result was a large hill of soil to be later used for backfilling and to distribute around the property and regrade around the new building. Our good neighbors loaned me their compact track loader for the job and it brought me back to being a little kid playing in our backyard, moving dirt and making roads with toy tractors and trucks. I can understand why someone would become a heavy equipment operator. Moving dirt is fun and moving dirt with a machine is even more fun. It took me a couple of days to level all the soil and get it ready for planting new pasture but it was immensely satisfying to push into the pile with the shovel of the loader and come up with a big scoop of dirt, move it to low spots and level it out. The prophet Isaiah must have had some experience with this kind of dirt moving when he wrote, “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.” He is writing his comforting words to a people in exile of course be he could well be drawing on the same experience of moving dirt around and leveling it out. Very satisfying!
