When they were done, Peter said to Harrie, “Oh, by the way, there is a patient lying on a gurney in the corridor and he is not breathing. Alarmed, Harrie quickly made his way there and indeed found a man lying there who had an earlier surgery and was not breathing. He began heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and fortunately was able to revive the patient. Harrie had to have a little lesson with Peter as to the need prioritize certain things when working in this kind of hospital setting.
I love that story because it illustrates something about a culture that we have long lost in the West. It has been my experience as well while spending time in Africa that the social aspects of life are strong and important. Greeting one another, and spending time are at the heart of society. In our hurried individualism we have lost something very important.
