What really got me feeling nostalgic for home was seeing a sweet documentary film called “Dark Horse” about a small Welsh town whose simple folk decide to breed and raise a race horse to compete with the big moneyed horses of the racing elite. Dream Alliance is an 'underdog' horse who does them all proud. What really got me feeling nostalgic though was the sound track song that Welsh-born Tom Jones made popular, The Green Green Grass of Home. You’ve got to listen to it.( Tom Jones Green Green Grass of Home.)
When I left ten days ago, everything had that dried out, late summer feeling to it. When I got home it really was like coming to the green grass of home, as if the dry summer still had some life to give before the season’s turning. The song of course is about a death row inmate who imagines himself buried in his home town, but I believe it also expresses that deeper longing we all have, expressed by St Augustine, “our heart is restless until it rests in you.” How much more for those who are forced to wander?
