I’m not quite sure why I like growing garlic as much as I do. We have a large variety of fruits and vegetables that we grow at Swallowfield but the garlic holds a special place. I think this is due in part to when it gets planted. Though garlic can be planted in the spring, we plant ours in November. After we prepare the soil, for what is a deep feeder, we set out the largest of the bulbs, and select the biggest cloves and plant them quite shallowly and cover with some compost. Last fall we planted 400 garlic cloves. Early in January the first shoots are beginning to surface and the anticipation begins. Apart from some lettuce greens, garlic is really the first thing to be harvested. Once the scapes, the flower and seeds, start showing and been plucked we begin to anticipate the harvest. Garlic loves the wet cold spring and the bulbs fatten. A few weeks ago we pulled them and hung them to dry and this week we cleaned them to ready for storage. With garlics stored away, the rest of the harvest can begin.
