In an average week we feed our pigs about 250 lbs of fruit and vegetable trim and waste. By the way, pigs do not like citrus fruit for some reason. On top of that we also feed shelf dated dairy when we get it. This past week I emptied and cleaned hundreds of containers and reclaimed 80 litres of milk products. Pigs love yogurt, especially the flavoured varieties but anything goes. Each week I have a stack of cardboard and a bin of plastic unless some other use shows up for it.
Canadians throw away $31 Billion worth of food each year and if you count in the cost of production, packaging and transportation it reaches $100 Billion. That does not factor in the cost of greenhouse gas emissions from methane gas, etc. Statistics vary greatly for home food waste, anywhere from 40 to over 50% of all food purchased goes uneaten. When you think of world food shortages and care of the earth, it is an embarrassment on a grand scale. The Western world could be characterized as hogs but it would be an insult to the lowly animals who do their part in recycling the waste.
