We went to see disPLACE, the inaugural theatre production of Dark Glass Theatre at Trinity Western University last night. The company is committed to telling the stories of people who may not otherwise have a voice and thereby increasing our empathy and compassion and decreasing our judgemental attitudes. In the case of disPLACE the first person stories are those of refugees who make their way to Canada from Russia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Syria and Columbia. The students did a credible and at times emotionally punchy job of the retelling, capturing the nuances with believable accents and turns of phrase of those learning English. The original music and lyrics were also a lovely element that these young actors were able pull off. For anyone wanting to feel something of what the refugee experience might be like, the show is worth seeing.
