The name crocus comes from the Greek word krokos which means saffron which is where the spice comes from. The stigma of the flower can be harvested for that purpose. The Dutch traders brought this flower bulb from Asia in the 1500’s and it was very likely one of the first bulbs to make its way to North America and somehow right into our yard.
