On this Thanksgiving Monday morning I want to provide a focus for your gratitude giving. Even as the weeks of Covid 19 give way to months and we are well past the half year mark of the pandemic, and despite the many changes in our lives, our basic needs are met, our children are going to school again, and we have access to good health care. Similar challenges have been faced by many impoverished communities in Africa and in particular, Sierra Leone. The big difference is still to come. The global economic slowdown will and is having an enormous impact on the world’s poorest communities if we do not maintain our efforts to counteract this impact. As we feel economic hardships, the poor of the world will feel it more profoundly.
On this day of gratitude, I would like to ask you to consider giving toward the building a simple school structure in the village of Kendeya. The community is about a 100 km from Kabala, four hours from Freetown in Koinadugu District. About 1300 people live in this village which has a primary school but the nearest Junior Secondary School is almost 15 kms away. Under the supervision of the Christian Reformed Church, the community started a school that is making due in a simple structure but will need a permanent building in order to receive government funds. They have several qualified teachers and community volunteers committed to making bricks and providing the unskilled labour. For $13,000 CDN they could complete the building with the cement, metal roofing and furniture needed to begin classes. The community has also given them five acres of land that can be used to grow crops that could support teacher wages.
Global Partners in Christian Education has been working with the development agency World Renew and the Christian Reformed Church of Sierra Leone to increase the levels of education in the country. You can make your gift on the Global Partners site at this link All gifts are will receive a charitable tax receipt. With your generosity, it is very possible that by the end of the next dry season students will be learning in their new school building. This is a gift of hope to children who are very keen to be learning, to change their lives and the lives of their families.
