A friend of ours just recommended The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe and as the title suggests it’s about a mother and son who start a ‘book club’ soon after the mother finds out she has terminal cancer. Their journey toward that, before the book club was started, was their frequent question of each other, “What are you reading?” The son and his siblings were swimming in the water of literature from early on and the mutual love of books inspired these conversations and last months and years of reading together. Will’s mother is so passionate about books that she also spends her last years generating the funds to start a library in war torn Afghanistan. Books to begin life and books till the end. More about that book another time.
Most of our book lending happens through our wonderful little library which is in the Fort Langley Community Hall. It’s tiny but also as big as the world. They have started an awesome program to encourage parents to read to their babies: “1000 Stories before Kindergarten.” You get a reading log at the library and as you read you fill the booklet with a 1000 stickers, one for each story. What a way to love a child.
